Tee Talks was created as a space where psychology meets lived experience.
In a world flooded with quick advice and oversimplified wellness trends, this platform offers research-informed perspectives on emotional wellbeing, identity, relationships, and life transitions, all grounded in both psychological theory and cultural context.
My work is grounded in counselling psychology and global mental health, with a focus on how emotional experiences are shaped by culture, context, and life transitions. I approach emotions not as obstacles to overcome, but as signals that carry information about our needs, environments, and identities. Drawing from compassion-based frameworks, mindfulness-informed practices, and evidence-based regulation strategies, I explore how emotional skills can be learned rather than assumed.
I write and work from the position of a counselling psychology graduate student in Toronto, shaped by cross-cultural experience and ongoing academic training. My perspective is informed by both formal education and lived exposure to migration, identity transitions, and the evolving demands placed on modern individuals. This standpoint influences how I understand emotional wellbeing, not as a universal formula, but as something deeply contextual.
Emotional turbulence is often framed as dysfunction or weakness. I view it differently. Many of the struggles we experience stem not from personal failure, but from a lack of emotional education and contextual understanding. Tee Talks exists to contribute to that understanding, offering research-informed reflections on identity, relationships, and life transitions in a way that is accessible, grounded, and culturally aware.
The goal is not perfection. It is clarity.
And with clarity comes agency!

For over three years now, I’ve had the privilege of learning under the guidance of Merrill Barber, a compassionate and deeply skilled social worker based in Toronto. What began as an internship has grown into a mentorship that continues to shape not just my professional journey, but my personal values as a coach.
Merrill has a rare gift for turning theory into lived wisdom. She has helped me bridge the gap between textbooks and real life, whether it's understanding the nuance of a client’s experience or honing therapeutic tools like active listening, communication, and gentle presence. Through her patience and her calm, grounded energy, she has taught me that healing is not rushed, rather it’s held, witnessed, and nurtured with care.
Some of my most memorable moments with Merrill have been during our check-in calls, where I’ve been able to share small reflections or contribute ideas to her client work. Each time she listens, values my input, and sometimes even integrates it into her practice, it reminds me how empowering mentorship can be. It’s not just about learning from someone brilliant, but about being trusted enough to grow alongside them.
What I admire most in Merrill is her unwavering compassion, not only for her clients, but for me as a learner. Her presence is patient and kind, never rushed, always open. She teaches by example, and every interaction with her reminds me of the kind of practitioner and person I hope to become.
If you’re looking for someone grounded, insightful, and incredibly kind to walk alongside you in your healing journey, I wholeheartedly encourage you to explore Merrill’s work at merrillbarber.ca.
